Swedish traditions seen from Chile, where the seasons run the other way.

Lucia · 13 December

A procession dressed in white walks in singing by candlelight, led by a Lucia wearing a crown of lights. They sing ‘Sankta Lucia’ to the Neapolitan tune and eat lussekatter, saffron buns. In Sweden it comes in the darkest time of the year; in Chile, just before summer.

Midsommar · late June

Celebrated on the Friday between 19 and 25 June. A pole covered in leaves and flowers goes up, people dance in rings to ‘Små grodorna’, the little frogs, and eat herring, new potatoes and strawberries. In Chile it falls on the longest night of the year, around We Tripantu and Chile’s National Day of Indigenous Peoples.

Valborg · 30 April

On the eve of 1 May, bonfires are lit and student choirs sing in the spring. In Uppsala and Lund it is a huge student celebration. In Chile, meanwhile, the cold is setting in.

Fika

A break with coffee and something sweet, usually with other people. On 4 October it is kanelbullens dag, cinnamon bun day.
