Falun
In Swedish
Falun is the county town of Dalarna and grew up around a copper mine that was worked for more than a thousand years. For anyone from Chile the story will sound familiar: here, too, copper decided everything.

Things to do in Falun
Go down Falu gruva
At its peak the mine supplied up to two thirds of Europe's copper, and it closed in 1992. From the rim you look into Stora Stöten, the pit left by the 1687 collapse, and there are guided tours underground.
Miners' quarters
Elsborg, Gamla Herrgården and Östanfors still have the small wooden houses where the miners lived. In Gamla Herrgården you will find Vass Britas gård, a 17th-century miner's farmstead.
Carl Larsson-gården
The home of the artists Carl and Karin Larsson is in Sundborn, just outside Falun, and can only be seen on a guided tour. Tours run all year, with English tours at weekends.
Winter at Lugnet
Lugnet is the town's ski complex, complete with ski jumps. Falun hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954, 1974, 1993 and 2015, and hosts them again from 24 February to 7 March 2027.

When to go
Best timeJune to August
Long days suit the mine, the wooden quarters and walking. In winter the plan changes: cross-country skiing at Lugnet and ploughed skating tracks on Lake Runn.
