Kiruna
In Swedish
Kiruna sits about 200 km north of the Arctic Circle and lives off LKAB's iron ore mine, which is eating its way under the old town centre. So the town is moving its centre roughly 3 km east, and you can see the move in progress.

Things to do in Kiruna
The new centre
Start at Kristallen, the town hall opened in 2018, with the old town hall's clock tower re-erected beside it. Kiruna Church, built in 1912, was rolled in one piece about 5 km to its new site in August 2025.
Go down the mine
The official tourist guide offers guided tours of the world's largest underground iron ore mine. It is the clearest way to understand why the town is moving.
Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi
About 17 km from town, the hotel is rebuilt every winter from ice and snow taken from the Torne River. In spring it melts back into the river.
Aurora in Abisko
Abisko National Park lies in the same municipality and has almost no light pollution. In summer it is where the 440 km Kungsleden trail begins.
