Örebro

In Swedish

Örebro lies in the middle of Sweden, on the Svartån river and close to Lake Hjälmaren. It is a university city with a stone castle in the middle of the river and the Kilsbergen ridge nearby when you want to head into the forest.

Things to do in Örebro

  1. Örebro Castle

The castle was built on an islet in the Svartån in the late 13th century and enlarged by Gustav Vasa in the 1560s. It stands right in the centre.

  2. Wadköping

On the banks of the Svartån, Wadköping gathers wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, with museums and craft workshops. It works as an open-air museum of the old wooden town.

  3. Up the Svampen

The mushroom-shaped water tower is 58 metres tall and opened in 1958. At the top there is a café with a viewing terrace, and similar towers stand in Kuwait.

  4. Birdwatching at Oset

The Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserve lies where the Svartån flows into Hjälmaren. It is a Ramsar site and a good spot for birdwatching.
