Things to do in Kalmar
Kalmar Castle
It began as a round watchtower in the 12th century and was built up into a fortress by Magnus Ladulås in the 1280s. It stands on Slottsholmen, where the medieval harbour used to be.
Kvarnholmen and cathedral
The town centre sits on the island of Kvarnholmen, built up from the 1650s when the town moved away from the castle. On Stortorget stands the cathedral, an example of classicist architecture.
Kalmar County Museum
Housed in an old steam mill, it gives a whole floor to the warship Kronan, which the museum has been investigating since 1981, plus a large exhibition on Jenny Nyström, known as the 'mother of the Swedish tomte', the Christmas gnome.
Over to Öland
The Öland Bridge is 6,072 metres long, Sweden's longest bridge if you count only Swedish territory. It lands at Möllstorp, next to Färjestaden.
